ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL
When you arrive at school:
- Greet your friends quickly, and go directly to our classroom.
- Check the morning message board for specific instructions and morning work.
- Go directly to your desk and unpack your book bag. Be sure you have everything you need for the day.
- Hang up your jacket and book bag on your assigned hook in the lockers.
- Use homeroom time to sharpen pencils, complete morning work, select A.R. books and prepare for class. You must be seated at your desk and quiet by 8:50. Everyone MUST BE SILENT for morning announcements.
If you need to use the restroom during class:
- You must sign yourself out on the sign-out sheet by the door. You must record your name, the time you leave for the bathroom and the time you return. Your visits to the bathroom should not exceed 5 minutes.
- You must always take the bathroom pass with you.
- Only one girl and one boy may be in the bathroom at a time.
- Please try to wait for instructions to a lesson before you use the bathroom. I understand that sometimes there are emergencies, but if you can wait, it prevents the “What are we doing?” questions.
- You do not need to ask my permission to use the bathroom, but you may NOT abuse this privilege. For example, you should not be using the bathroom more than once an hour. You need to be as quick as possible in the bathroom and not linger in the hallway or disrupt any other classes. If I see that you are signing out to use the bathroom quite frequently (more than three times a day plus the group bathroom break), expect a phone call home to address any medical issues.
DRINKS
The only time you may use the water fountain is during our morning bathroom break and after recess. Be respectful of your classmates waiting to use the fountain and limit your drink to 10 seconds.
SINK
Only students with permission may use the sink. Hands should be washed in the bathroom.
PENCIL SHARPENER
This year all pencils will be sharpened daily by me. I will have a bin of sharpened pencils out at all times for your use.
USE OF CLASS SUPPLIES
Student Supplies- Each group of students will have access to a supply bin with crayons, markers, scissors and glue.
Supplies on Ms. Salvatore’s desk – You must have my special permission to use or remove anything from my desk, from behind my desk, in closets or on shelves. I really appreciate your respect.
Tissues – You may get up at any time for a tissue. Please try to use only one tissue so they do not go to waste. We want our tissue supply to last until June! Remember to get a squirt of hand sanitizer after blowing your nose.
Towels and Wipes – You must ask to use a paper towel or wet wipe. Again, remember to use only one.
TRASH
Please do your part to make Room 14 a nice place to be. All trash and scraps go in the trash-can. Please do not place trash and unnecessary papers in your desk.
BOOKS
All text books should be kept in your desk at all times. If you’d like to borrow a book from my personal library, you are more than welcome. Each book has a library card in the back. Simply place that card with your name on the check-out chart. This way I can keep track of who has which book and how many.
HALL PASS
If you need to leave the classroom for a reason other than the bathroom, you MUST have my permission. Remember to take the hall pass. Please walk to your destination without disturbing others and take the most direct route.
NURSE
If you need to see the nurse, you must have a pass from the teacher. You simply explain your situation and a pass will be made accordingly. Class time is precious, so please only use a nurse pass when it’s absolutely necessary.
LINE
At the beginning of the year, you will be given a number which corresponds to the alphabetical order of your first name. This will be your number for the entire year. Whether we are lining up for lunch, special or returning from recess, we will always line up in numerical order (1,2,3,4,5...). In the hallways, you are expected to walk in a quiet, straight line. If you are unable to do so, it will result in a fine of crocodollars. STAIRS
Please use caution while using the stairs. You must walk silently on the stairs at all times. Please stay over to the right side as far as you can. Take one step at a time, and walk!
DISMISSAL
I will always invite walkers and car riders to pack up first, as they are dismissed first. Then I will call you by name to pack up. You should take your backpack and any other belongings back to your seat where you will pack up for the day. Make sure you have your take-home folder with your homework inside as well as your agenda. After you are finished packing up, take this time to perform your classroom job. When you finish your job, go back to your desk and sit down. The class must be SILENT for the PM announcements.Walkers and car-riders will be called first. When you are called, you must remain seated, raise your hand, and wait until I dismiss you. You will be expected to walk silently to the gym, where you will wait to be dismissed. After walkers and car-riders have been called, I will ask the bus riders to line up. Before you line up at the door, please place your chair on top of your desk and do a last-minute check of your area to make sure it’s clean.
GRADING
- In third grade, students are evaluated on a standards-based scale (i.e. 1 = well below standard, 2 = approaching the standard, 3 = meets the standard, 4 = exceeds the standard).
- I will base these ratings on in-class assignments, in-class assessments, district assessments (i.e. Star Reading and Math).
HOMEWORK
- Homework is assigned on a needs-basis, meaning it might not be given every night. So please check my website and your child's agenda for assignments.
- It is the student’s responsibility to copy his or her homework into the agenda book every afternoon. Time is provided specifically for this purpose.
- Parents should check their child's agenda every night.
- Students who do not return homework in a timely manner (after the morning announcements, work is considered “late”) or return incomplete homework will be required to complete it at recess time. If this becomes a habit, a conference will be scheduled with the student and parent so we may address the situation
TAKE HOME FOLDERS
- Every child has a blue take-home folder that should be carried to and from school every day.
- Parents should check this folder daily. It will contain graded papers, homework, forms to be filled out, important notices, etc.
- Items on the “Keep at Home” side should be emptied out nightly.
- Please place any notes to me on the “Return to School” side and I will get them when I check homework in the morning.
BEHAVIOR
At Lancashire, you are expected to be responsible, respectful, peaceful and safe. We expect all students to follow these rules. Exceptional behavior will be rewarded; unacceptable behavior (anything that causes problems for you or someone else) will have consequences.
To keep track of behavior, we use Classroom Dojo; here students may earn or lose points which then translate to rewards (i.e. lunch with the teacher, writing in pen, etc.). Parents may sign up with Classroom Dojo to track their child's progress.
FOR THE PARENTS
BIRTHDAYS
Please let me know at least a day in advance if you plan to send a birthday treat to school for the class. Please do not send ice-cream or any treat that requires refrigeration. If your treat requires utensils such as forks or spoons, please send them. Napkins are helpful as well.It is Brandywine School District policy that we are not to have any kind of knife at school (even plastic). If you send something that requires cutting, please cut it at home before you send it to school.Students who have summer birthdays should not be left out of school birthday celebrations! They may celebrate their half-birthday.
EARLY DISMISSAL, CHANGE IN DISMISSAL AND ABSENCES
As much as I would like to see your child all day, every school day, there will likely be times when your child has an early dismissal or is absent from school. In the event of an early dismissal, please either call the office or send a note with your child so that they are prepared to leave when you arrive at school.I will do my best to make sure that your child has any assignments for the night prior to their dismissal. In the even that your child is absent from school, please send a hand-written note to school upon his or her return with the reason for the absence. You may refer to the Code of Conduct for what constitutes an excused absence. If your child’s method of transportation home from school changes, please notify me and the office of the change (even if it’s only for one day). This is for the safety of your child.Regarding fevers, it is recommended by the nurses in Brandywine School District that students who have a fever remain at home until they have been fever-free WITHOUT MEDICATION for 24 hours. This is for the well-being of all students and building staff, to prevent the spread of illness.
WATER BOTTLES
Although we have a water-fountain in the classroom, many students find it easier to have a water bottle at their seat.If you choose to send a water bottle to school, please send the “sport top” type (the kid that pops up at the top). This type of top is less likely to spill if the bottle is accidentally knocked over. Water only, please!
RECESS
Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. As the weather gets colder, your child will still be going outside for recess. Please make sure that on cold days, your child comes to school with a coat, hat, gloves, scarf, and anything else they may need while playing outdoors. On bad-weather days, we will have recess indoors. If you would like to send a game to school for students to share, please feel free. Be sure to mark the game box with your child’s name. Please understand that although I will do my best to make sure all game parts get back into the box, small items sometimes get lost in the classroom and your game may come back to you with a missing piece or two. Old games that are no longer played with at home are perfect for indoor recess!
PARENT HELPERS
I am always looking for parent helpers! These helpers can come in to school to help grade papers, work on classroom displays, make copies, laminate, or any number of other helpful things.Parent helpers can also be “at-home” helpers. These helpers can do things like grade math speed tests, cut out items, assemble things that need assembling, or several other things.
CLASS DONATIONS
If you would like to donate anything to the class – gently used children’s books, art supplies (especially construction paper), colored copy paper, cardstock paper, ink pads, stickers, etc., they are always welcome!
BOOK ORDERS
I will be sending Scholastic book orders home with your child approximately once a month. Book orders are a great way to build your child’s library at home! Every time you order from our Scholastic Book Clubs, you will also be helping to earn free items for the classroom. If you choose to place an order, please return the order form in an envelope marked with your child’s name with either cash (exact change, please) or a check made out to Scholastic. I will let you know of the order deadline when the order form is sent home.Orders can also be placed online using a credit card. Instructions will be sent home with each book order.
GRADING
Please check your child's take-home folders regularly for graded work.
CONTACTING MS. SALVATORE
The easiest way to reach me is by emailing me at [email protected]. If you do not have internet access, you can either call me at school (475-3990 ext. 205) either before 8:35am or after 3:40pm. Another option is to write me a note:
- In the agenda book, where you sign your name.
- On your own paper, placed in the take-home folder.
